Who is QPASTT for?

QPASTT aims to provide assistance to people who have undergone, witnessed, or experienced torture or trauma, in or during flight from their homes and countries, or have experienced political, ethnic or religious victimisation or war.

Australia accepts between 11,000 - 13,000 people under its refugee and humanitarian programs annually, with 8% of these arriving in Queensland. A large percentage of these people have experienced torture or refugee related trauma prior to their arrival.

People who have been tortured or traumatised may have a number of long-term physical, emotional and psychological effects. These effects may include:

  • broken bones, torn tendons
  • damaged teeth, problems with vision, brain damage
  • difficulties with sleeping, experience recurrent nightmares
  • have difficulty with concentration and trusting others
  • difficulty in maintaining family relationships

It is also common for survivors, including children, to feel depressed and anxious and to have lost pleasure in life.
