“Keeping Up: Stories and Reflections of Young Refugees in Brisbane: A Worker’s Guide”

'Keeping Up'With BCC funding “Keeping Up” was developed with and by young people to document their stories, reflections, photos, and issues about life here in Australia. It was intended as a “youth voice” where young people took pictures and told stories about arriving, settling and living in Australia. The worker’s guide includes definitions, visa categories and world refugee hot spots, ideas of ways for organisations and individual workers to work with young people and a listing of agency contact details plus language and religion charts. Click here and follow the link for a preview of 'Keeping Up' (this may take awhile to download).

“Our Lives Past Present & Future” – A Scrapbook of Stories by Young Refugee Women Living in Brisbane from Former Yugoslavia

“Solid Ground” Video & Workers Guide

In partnership with CONTACT Inc and funded by the Office of Youth Affairs “Solid Ground” was produced by young people talking about their experiences.  Issues covered include settlement, school and legal issues especially in relation to those on a temporary protection visa.

Safe Places: Sigurna Mjesta: Information Kit

Safe Places is a two-part kit with information, stories, ideas and support for youth workers. The Safe Places kit contains two parts: a video and a research publication. The video was created by Mohammad, Jawid, Emina, Semhar, Saliha, Anjum and Ana Pocrnjic. The video is a snapshot of a six week creative arts process, wherein young people talk, sing, write and draw about their experiences of the past and their hopes for the future.

The research publication covers practical and philosophical issues for those who work with young people, including:

  • setting up and running a project
  • respecting and consulting with young people
  • the importance of bi-cultural workers
  • how to create a safe space for young people to share, explore and create in a meaningful way

The Safe Places kit is available for sale from Youth Arts Queensland for $30, plus GST. Contact: Kara Beavis at Youth Arts Queensland on 07 3252 5115 or email po@yaq.org.au
