Migration & Resettlement Changes

All children need support and encouragement from their parents and family to develop. When children experience disruption, such as war trauma events and migration to another country, it can become more difficult for children to focus on the normal tasks of development. Children, like adults need time to adapt to changes.

Through migration and resettlement children may experience:

  • A different culture & language
  • Separation from significant loved ones
  • An unfamiliar home or changes in family dynamics
  • An unfamiliar school environment
  • Loss of family members, friends or even pets, toys
  • The difficulties of making new friends

It is normal for children to behave differently after any major changes have happened in their lives. These behaviours need attention in order to assist children to positively manage their reactions. New changes can also lead to stresses which in turn can lead to behaviour changes. Some of these are:

  • Difficulties sleeping, nightmares
  • Acting particularly naughty or quite unsettled
  • Becoming withdrawn and uncooperative
  • Acting unusually aggressive and  abusive to others and themselves
  • Becoming fearful & clingy, especially when separated from parents
  •  Regularly having headaches, stomach aches,  diarrhea
  • Regressing to earlier stages of development eg: sucking their thumb, wetting the bed
  • Lacking concentration or constantly daydreaming
  • Being easily disturbed by loud noises, feeling generally tense, anxious or fearful
  • Being afraid to make mistakes.
