- Find adequate support in dealing with changes & past experiences. Parents coping mechanisms & interactions with others are the role models that children can learn from
- Ask for feedback from teachers & try to attend the Parent/Teacher interviewing times. If there is a language barrier, the school should arrange an interpreter when requested
- Provide support & understanding to your child
- Talk together with your child about their experiences
- Believe their stories, so trust can be established and further issues explored.
- Maintain connections through talking, listening, understanding & most importantly expressing love to your child. Let your child know that they are still loved and wanted and that they still have a place to belong
- Encourage children’s self confidence – focus on their interests & abilities
- Try not to silence children’s complaints or punish difficult behavior
- Encourage children to express their feelings, including their fears
- Ask for other support as there are different services in Brisbane which can assist parents and children.
