| The song “Freedom” was written and recorded by 5 young people from Sudan, Iraq and Afghanistan in year 11 at Sunnybank High School. The song was part of a 10 week program called HIP (Help Increase the Peace) which was a joint initiative run by QPASTT, the Youth advocacy Centre and Kyabra Community Association.
Special thanks to Laraine Goldman at Sunnybank High School, Mobius Cube Studios and Tenzin Choegyal.
"Freedom"
Something I would like to tell the people about
My country and being a refugee
From a people at war
Many people at war
Tell the people why I come here
And what’s the problem in my country
So I come here
So I come here
There’s no one wannabe a refugee
There’s no one wanna war in my country
When I speak with the people
And they don’t understand
That’s one of the reasons
Why I feel different
What I would like the people
To know about us is
Don’t let our journey be useless
Don’t let our hard work be useless
We have the some problems
And that’s why we’re here
We trust you
To let us help ourselves
I want the people to change
From bad to good
Respect people who come
From other countries
There’s no one wannabe a refugee
There’s no one wanna war in my country
If I have more rights
I want the government to know us
Talk with them whenever we have problems
Let people be friends with us
How would you feel if you were like me?
When you speak people laugh at you
What I will say is that you will laugh at me
But I will learn and I will know what I need to know
Then you will see
In the end we’ll be brothers
